Open-source cloud coding agent (formerly OpenDevin) for autonomous software engineering tasks with a self-serve cloud tier.

OpenHands is an open-source platform for autonomous AI software development, built by All Hands AI and released under the MIT license. It began as OpenDevin, a community-driven answer to closed autonomous-coding agents, and has grown into one of the most widely used open agents you can run yourself. Its premise is that agentic development is too important to be controlled by a few companies, so the whole stack is built in the open.

Rather than suggesting code as you type, OpenHands runs agents that do the work a developer does: they plan a task, write and edit files across a codebase, run terminal commands, install dependencies, browse the web, run tests, and open pull requests, iterating until the task is complete or they reach a defined stopping point. You can hand it a plain-language task or point it at a GitHub issue and let it locate the code and submit a fix. Crucially, every agent runs inside an isolated sandbox, typically a Docker container, so it can act freely without risking the host machine.

OpenHands is model-agnostic. It connects to any major model, including Claude, GPT, and Gemini, or to local models, so teams choose their own provider and avoid lock-in. It can run on a laptop, a dedicated machine, or a server, and its newer control center, Agent Canvas, turns coding agents into an always-on, self-hosted engineering team that can run the built-in agent or third-party ones like Claude Code and Codex across local, remote, and cloud backends. Beyond interactive use, it supports automations that decompose issues into tasks or publish reports to Slack, and sub-agent delegation for running specialized agents in parallel.

For builders, an open agent SDK exposes the same engine that powers the CLI and the hosted cloud, letting developers add custom tools and strategies or embed agents in their own products. For organizations, OpenHands offers a managed cloud and an enterprise option with self-hosted private-cloud deployment, access controls, and budgeting, with Model Context Protocol support throughout. It is aimed at teams that want autonomous coding on their own infrastructure with full ownership of the workflow.

In practice

You want a Devin-style autonomous agent but on your own hardware with your own model. OpenHands is open source and model-agnostic, running coding agents in a sandboxed Docker container against whatever LLM you choose.

You'd rather hand off a GitHub issue than write the fix yourself. OpenHands takes the issue, locates the relevant code, makes the changes, runs the tests, and opens a pull request for you to review.

Your code can't go to a third-party service. OpenHands self-hosts on your own infrastructure, runs agents in isolated sandboxes, and offers a private-cloud enterprise deployment with access controls and budgeting.

Pricing

Free (OSS + Cloud Individual) · Enterprise custom

usage

Free tier

Included quota

Open Source (free, MIT, self-host): full agent, SDK/CLI/local GUI + Agent Canvas, sandboxed Docker runtime, unlimited conversations, any LLM (Claude/GPT-4o/Gemini/Llama/Qwen via OpenRouter/Ollama/direct keys). Cloud Individual (free, 1 user): BYOK or at-cost PAYG model usage, GitHub/GitLab/Bitbucket + Jira + Slack integrations, Cloud APIs, MCP - capped at 10 conversations/day. Enterprise (custom): self-hosted/private VPC, SSO/SAML, RBAC, multi-user + team billing, Agent Control Plane, unlimited concurrent conversations, Large Codebase SDK, priority support.

What is public

OpenHands (openhands.dev, by All Hands AI, formerly OpenDevin - open-source autonomous AI software-engineering agent that writes code, runs tests, debugs, and opens PRs end-to-end in a sandboxed Docker runtime) is largely free. Three deployment paths: (1) Open Source - MIT-licensed, self-host free, unlimited conversations, BYO LLM key; (2) Cloud Individual - FREE for 1 user (BYOK, or pay-as-you-go model usage via the OpenHands LLM provider at cost with NO markup), capped at 10 conversations/day; (3) Enterprise - custom-priced (self-hosted/VPC, SSO/SAML, RBAC, multi-user, Agent Control Plane, unlimited concurrency), formally launched May 2026 (OpenHands Automations now GA). There is NO flat individual paid subscription - you pay only for model inference.

Billing mechanics

OpenHands itself doesn't mark up: the OSS edition is free (you supply infra + LLM keys), and the Cloud Individual tier is free too - you either bring your own LLM key or pay-as-you-go for model usage through the OpenHands LLM provider 'at cost' (no markup). So spend = model-inference cost, not a platform fee. Enterprise is custom-contracted (self-hosted/VPC + team controls). MCP and Git/Jira/Slack integrations span the cloud plans.

Cost watchouts

'Free open source' is NOT 'free production usage' - serious work depends on LLM inference cost (BYOK or at-cost), which scales with task volume and model choice (cheaper models produce notably worse agent results); the Cloud Individual tier is capped at 10 conversations/day (constrains heavy use); self-hosting carries real setup friction (Docker/K8s, security hardening, model config); Enterprise rates are unpublished (sales-only); agent quality requires careful task scoping + human review

Variable cost rationale

Entirely usage-driven and pass-through - OpenHands takes no markup, so your cost is the underlying LLM inference (BYOK or at-cost PAYG) scaling with agent task volume and model choice; the platform fee is effectively zero until Enterprise

Additional watchouts

Free OSS does not equal free production - LLM costs dominate and cheap models degrade agent quality; Cloud Individual capped at 10 conversations/day; self-hosting setup friction (Docker/K8s, security hardening); needs tightly-scoped tasks + human review (ambiguous specs yield partial/incorrect solutions - risky to run unsupervised); Enterprise pricing opaque/sales-only and still maturing

Overage / add-ons

No platform overage on the free tiers - cost is purely model usage (BYOK or at-cost PAYG via the OpenHands LLM provider, no markup); the Cloud Individual tier is throttled by a 10-conversations/day cap rather than billing overage. Enterprise removes concurrency caps under a custom contract.

Commercial notes

Formerly OpenDevin (community response to Cognition's Devin, early 2024; co-created by CMU's Graham Neubig); rebranded under All Hands AI, $18.8M Series A led by Madrona (Nov 2025); ~76K GitHub stars, 490+ contributors; the leading open-source/self-hostable autonomous coding agent (the 'run your own Devin' pitch); benchmarked on SWE-bench (53%+ Verified with strong models); production users report ~87% same-day bug resolution; competes with Devin (proprietary, turnkey), Cursor (IDE, not autonomous), Claude Code (model-locked CLI), Codex

Key ambiguities

OpenHands has no flat individual paid SaaS tier - the Individual cloud plan is free (BYOK/at-cost PAYG), so the only 'paid' tier is custom Enterprise (no published rates); Enterprise was formally launched May 2026 and is still evolving (Automations recently GA); some sources mention a free hosted model (MiniMax-class) on the cloud free tier

Cancellation / refund

OSS is free (MIT, no contract); Cloud Individual is free (pay only model usage, BYOK or at-cost PAYG - no subscription to cancel); Enterprise is custom-contracted (self-hosted/VPC, team billing); no flat individual subscription exists

Support SLA / resale

Community support (OSS/Individual); Enterprise adds priority support, SSO/SAML, RBAC, centralized billing, Agent Control Plane, and Large Codebase SDK; runs in your environment (on-prem/private cloud) so code never leaves your control; sandboxed, fully auditable execution; MCP + Git/Jira/Slack integrations; ACP-compatible (can run Claude Code, Codex, Gemini as backends)

Missing data

Enterprise pricing is unpublished (custom, launched May 2026, still evolving). Seed clarification: there is NO flat individual paid floor - the Cloud Individual tier is FREE (BYOK or at-cost PAYG model usage via the OpenHands LLM provider, no markup, 10 conversations/day cap); the OSS edition is free (MIT, unlimited self-host); the only paid tier is custom Enterprise.
