Entry price$99/month for 100 AI conversationsFull pricing detail

Nextiva's XBert AI Employee handles inbound calls, SMS and web chat using business knowledge and configured skills. It can qualify a lead, update a CRM contact or book a calendar appointment, then send a confirmation or escalate to staff, with a Receptionist skill routing work among skills inside one conversation. XBert is sold on its own or with the NEXT platform, and the standalone edition is narrower on permissions, supervision and tickets. The product page prices it at $99 a month for 100 conversations and $0.99 after, while a default usage sheet lists $1.50 per session.

Nextiva, Inc., a Delaware corporation based in Scottsdale, Arizona, sells business phone service, a contact center and the NEXT unified communications platform to more than 1.7 million customers. XBert is its AI Employee for customer conversations, sold on its own or as an add on to a Nextiva plan. It answers inbound calls, SMS and web chat, works from company knowledge and acts in connected systems, booking appointments, creating leads, updating contacts and opening support tickets. New customers start on the current XBert, while existing customers stay on XBert AI Classic until Nextiva offers migration.

Setup takes minutes from business details or a Google Business Profile: the customer picks a prebuilt Receptionist, Sales or Support role and sets a name, voice, greeting and channels. A Default Receptionist skill routes each conversation among support, lead generation and scheduling skills and carries context between them, capping retries and escalating repeated failures.

Skills connect to HubSpot, Salesforce and Zoho for leads, contacts and tickets, to Google Calendar and Outlook through Workato and to Calendly, Square and GoHighLevel for appointments, and to Shopify for order questions. Knowledge collections built from files and imported web pages are attached to the skills that need them. English, Spanish, French and German are on by default, with Ukrainian, Mandarin and Indian languages on request, and an Advanced Editor for direct changes remains in beta.

The standalone product is narrower than NEXT. It has one General Inbox, no internal team transfer, no supervisor view and no outbound calling, every user is an administrator, conversations do not create tickets automatically, an AI call ends after 45 minutes, and the upgrade path to NEXT is not open yet. Handoff goes to an external number or a staff alert with a summary. Single sign on is available, and the platform is SOC 2 Type II audited, ISO 27001 certified and PCI DSS compliant, with HIPAA eligibility under a BAA. Storage region cannot be chosen, the model behind XBert is unnamed, and Nextiva's TypeScript SDK controls work items and calls, not the AI Employees themselves.

The product page prices XBert at $99 a month for 100 AI conversations, then $0.99 each, with no contract and a 30 day money back guarantee; a conversation is a call longer than 30 seconds or a text or chat thread with at least three interactions.

Nextiva's default usage sheet for the NEXT line, updated in October 2026, lists $1.50 per AI Employee session and $3.00 per phone number unless a contract says otherwise, so the effective rate depends on which terms an account is on. XBert suits small and midsize businesses that want calls and chats answered, leads captured and appointments booked inside a communications product they may already use.

Teams that need supervisor oversight, role separation, outbound calling, a choice of model or an API for managing agents will find the standalone edition short of them.

Integrations

HubSpot, Salesforce and Zoho functions create leads, update contacts and open external tickets. Calendar skills book through Google Calendar and Outlook by way of Workato, and through Calendly, Square and GoHighLevel, with differing operation coverage. Shopify support retrieves order and product information. Persistent knowledge collections support retrieval. The broader Nextiva SDK exposes work item and call control operations.

In practice

A service business receives an evening call; XBert collects the customer's details, checks Google Calendar and books an available appointment.

A customer starts a web chat about an existing issue; a support skill retrieves a HubSpot record, answers from the business knowledge base and creates an external ticket.

An unsupported request triggers an external call transfer or a summary notification so staff can continue the conversation.

Integrations & Tool Calling Full

During a conversation an AI Employee can create leads and open support tickets in HubSpot, Salesforce or Zoho, update contacts in HubSpot and Zoho (the Salesforce functions stop at cases and leads), and check availability, book, reschedule or cancel appointments in Google Calendar and Outlook, which run through a Workato integration, as well as in Calendly, Square and GoHighLevel. Administrators choose which functions each skill may call, and when a CRM connection fails the lead data is cached for a later retry. Standalone XBert does not turn conversations into native tickets.

Workflow Orchestration Full

A Default Receptionist skill runs every conversation and routes intent among the other skills, support, lead generation and scheduling, carrying context from one to the next, so an appointment request flows through an availability check, a booking and a confirmation text. The runtime caps repeated function attempts and escalates when a skill keeps failing. Guided training turns answers about the business into each skill's instructions and conditions, and skills can be added or removed without rebuilding the AI Employee; an Advanced Editor for direct changes is still labeled beta.

Knowledge Grounding & RAG Full

Knowledge bases are kept as collections searched by Document Search or Structured Data retrieval, filled from uploaded files or imported website content, and attached to the AI Employees and skills that should use them, with a view of where each collection is in use. Setup can also start from the business's Google Business Profile, from which XBert learns services, policies and FAQs. Imported web pages do not resync on their own, so a changed site has to be imported again.

Human Oversight & Guardrails Partial

When a customer needs a person, standalone XBert transfers the call to a chosen external number or alerts staff by email or text with a conversation summary, and skill instructions set when that happens, such as after an unsupported request or repeated failures. The standalone product has no internal team transfer or supervisor view, and every user is an administrator. Bookings, CRM updates and follow up messages go through without anyone approving them first.

Security, Identity & Governance Full

Single sign on is available for XBert, and the wider NEXT administration adds identity provider setup and directory sync. The platform behind XBert is SOC 2 Type II audited, ISO 27001 certified and PCI DSS compliant, its data centers meet ISO 27001 with independent verification, and healthcare use becomes HIPAA eligible once a BAA is signed. Permissions inside standalone XBert are flat: every user is an administrator, with no separate agent or supervisor roles.

Observability & Auditability Partial

An AI Employee Engagement dashboard and an AI Employee Report track conversations handled, their length, the share answered without a transfer, transfers to an external number and escalations by notification, and reports can be filtered by time or channel, downloaded and scheduled. Each conversation in the inbox keeps its transcript, recording and summary. Which function a skill called, with what inputs and result, does not appear anywhere, and standalone XBert has no live supervisor monitoring.

Sourcehelp.nextiva.com/article/xbertread 2026-10-19

Memory & State Persistence Partial

Context for a conversation comes from the customer's identity and whatever CRM lookups return, such as earlier tickets or contact details, and it carries between skills while the conversation lasts. Transcripts, summaries and recordings stay in the shared inbox for staff. The AI Employee keeps no store of its own for facts learned across conversations, with a set scope, retention or edit controls, so a returning customer is recognized through the CRM record and the conversation history on their contact.

Deployment & Data Residency Not documented

XBert is a hosted Nextiva service, sold on its own or inside NEXT, with numbers, SMS and web chat configured in Nextiva's cloud and nothing installed in the customer's environment. Eight points of presence and carrier grade data centers with 99.999% uptime keep the network redundant, but none of those locations is a storage region a customer can choose, and there is no private cloud, customer tenant or on premises edition of the AI Employee.

Sourcehelp.nextiva.com/article/xbertread 2026-10-19

Prebuilt Agents / Templates / Packs Full

Setup starts from a prebuilt Receptionist, Sales or Support role, and a skill picker adds packaged skills for appointments in Google Calendar, Outlook, Calendly, Square or GoHighLevel, Shopify support, and Zoho, HubSpot or Salesforce customer workflows, grouped by category such as CRM and sales, ecommerce and field service. Guided training asks business questions and adapts the chosen skill's prompts and conditions. Some packages are lighter than others: the in person service scheduling option sends a booking link, while connected appointment skills book directly.

Sourcehelp.nextiva.com/article/next-2-0-ai-employeesread 2026-10-19

Triggers & Channel Coverage Full

Inbound calls, SMS and website chats start an AI Employee conversation automatically, and channel settings decide whether it answers first, steps in as a fallback or covers set hours. Standalone XBert keeps every channel for a customer in one General Inbox thread, has no email or social channels and cannot place outbound calls, so follow up runs through a callback request or a text from the inbox number. An AI call ends automatically after 45 minutes.

Sourcehelp.nextiva.com/article/xbertread 2026-10-19

Model Flexibility & Routing Not documented

Personalization covers the AI Employee's name, voice, greeting, instructions, skills and language: English, Spanish, French and German are on by default, and Ukrainian, Mandarin and Indian languages and accents are switched on through account support. None of those settings selects the language model, and XBert names neither the model nor its provider, so customers can neither pick one nor bring their own key or endpoint.

Sourcehelp.nextiva.com/article/next-2-0-ai-employeesread 2026-10-19

APIs / SDKs / MCP Extensibility Full

Nextiva's developer platform publishes a TypeScript WorkitemService SDK whose methods fetch work items and control calls, hold, hang up, mute and warm transfer, with notifications as their state changes, so customer software can act on the platform directly. Standalone XBert settings have no REST API page, and no public API creates or edits AI Employees themselves, so building and changing agents stays in the admin interface while the SDK works on the conversations they hand off.

Sourcedeveloper.nextiva.com/nextiva/docs/workitem-serviceread 2026-10-19

Testing, Debugging & Optimization Partial

Before launch, administrators preview the AI Employee in chat and work through a testing checklist covering common questions, each skill, requests it cannot handle and handoff to a person, then revise training and instructions. After launch the engagement dashboard and report show how sessions and skills performed. Simulated customer runs, scored results and a check that holds back a weaker version from going live are not part of the product.

Sourcehelp.nextiva.com/article/next-2-0-ai-employeesread 2026-10-19

Browser / Computer-use Not documented

Business actions run through connected CRM, calendar, commerce and messaging functions, the website widget is where customers talk to the agent, and website imports feed the knowledge base ahead of time. When a system has no supported connection, the AI Employee has no way to work its screens instead, so the task goes to a person through a transfer or a notification, and staff reach the product itself through its web application.

Pricing

$99/month for 100 AI conversations

Monthly base plus qualifying AI conversations; separate default sheet uses AI sessions

Included quota

100 AI conversations per month. Product FAQ counts calls longer than 30 seconds and SMS or web chat threads with three or more interactions.

What is public

Monthly XBert price, included conversations, extra conversation rate, qualifying interaction thresholds and a 30 day guarantee.

Billing mechanics

A $99 monthly base includes 100 conversations. Calls over 30 seconds and SMS or web chat threads with at least three interactions qualify; the default usage sheet uses a separate session rate.

Cost watchouts

Unlimited call handling does not mean unlimited included AI conversations. The default usage sheet charges $3.00 per phone number and per toll free number, $0.015 a minute for domestic outbound voice and $0.025 for toll free inbound beyond the plan, and using NEXT adds its own plan costs.

Variable cost rationale

Conversation volume, the unresolved session rate, telephone numbers and separately charged calling can change the bill.

Additional watchouts

The $0.99 conversation offer and $1.50 session sheet disagree. Phone numbers, calling and an optional NEXT subscription can add charges.

Overage / add-ons

Product offer: $0.99 per additional conversation. Default usage sheet: $1.50 per AI Employee session, subject to contractual rates.

Sales call required

No, self serve available

Free / trial

30 day money back guarantee. A separate AI Receptionist promotion mentions a 14 day trial without establishing the current XBert allowance.

Lowest paid plan

XBert AI Employee: $99 per month for 100 AI conversations.

Commercial notes

Available standalone or as a NEXT addition. Self service onboarding exists, while the marketing call to action also routes to a demo.

Key ambiguities

The product page charges $0.99 per additional conversation, its price box counts 'interactions' where the FAQ counts conversations, and the default usage sheet lists $1.50 per AI Employee session as the NEXT baseline unless a contract says otherwise.

Cancellation / refund

XBert product offer states no long term contract and a 30 day money back guarantee. Exact cancellation procedure and refund eligibility depend on the applicable agreement.

Support SLA / resale

Guided setup and account support are available. The product offer does not specify a standalone XBert support SLA or resale allowance.

Missing data

Reconciled session definition and tariff, setup fees, standalone support SLA, trial allowance and detailed cancellation process.
