Playcode
Also known as: Playcode AI, Playcode Cloud, PlayCode, playcode.io
Playcode pairs Playcode AI, an agent with its own cloud computer that builds websites, web apps and React Native mobile apps from a description, runs them and checks them in a real browser, with Playcode Cloud, which hosts the result with a database, file storage, background jobs, email, an AI gateway and custom domains. Models come from six labs at three levels, and an API, CLI, MCP server and SDK open the platform to coding agents and app code.
Playcode, online since 2016 and once best known as a JavaScript playground, now sells an AI builder and the runtime behind it to small businesses, founders, freelancers, agencies and owner operators who want a working site or app rather than a mockup. Playcode AI builds business websites, web apps with sign in and data, internal tools, and iPhone and Android apps from the same project, and Playcode Cloud runs them.
In a Cloud app the agent works on a real computer with a terminal, a browser and the app's database: it writes the code, installs what it needs, runs the app, opens it in a browser, looks at screenshots and fixes what is off before checking again. It plans larger jobs and splits them among helper agents, keeps working after the laptop closes, asks when a decision belongs to the owner and before it changes anything live, and keeps a written record of what it built and what was decided.
On request it also researches the web with sources, runs SEO research with Google search volumes, competitor keywords, backlinks and Lighthouse audits, and makes decks, images and short videos. Each Cloud app gets a build computer and a production computer in five sizes that sleep when idle, SQLite from the start with Postgres and Redis when needed, up to 200 GB of files, scheduled background jobs, encrypted secrets, app email and AI for the app's own users through Playcode's AI gateway, and a checkpoint before every publish so code, files and database restore together.
The Free plan publishes static sites with Playcode branding and trial AI credits; Pro costs $25 a month with 100 credits and up to three Cloud apps, and Max starts at $100 a month with 400 credits and up to ten apps, with larger credit packages and top ups. Credits, four to the dollar, pay for AI work, awake server hours, extra bandwidth, email and in app AI. Account, project and database data are stored in the EU, in Germany and Finland, with off site backups in the US, and SOC 2 Type II work is under way.
Playcode fits non technical owners and small teams that want one place to build, host and keep improving a real app with a backend, including from a phone, at predictable small business prices. It fits less well for teams that need single sign on, a finished SOC 2 report, self hosting, a choice of hosting region, or agents that start work on their own schedule.

Integrations
Playcode Cloud supplies the app's database (SQLite, Postgres, Redis), file storage, background jobs and schedules, Playcode Email, Playcode Domains and the Playcode AI Gateway for the app's own AI features, with encrypted secrets for payment and other third party keys such as Stripe. The agent uses models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, xAI, Moonshot and Z.ai, with DeepSeek and Alibaba models selectable, researches the web and runs SEO research with Google search data and Lighthouse. A GraphQL API, the playcode CLI, an MCP server for Claude Code and Cursor, and the @playcode/sdk package for app backends extend the platform.
In practice
A yoga studio owner asks for a booking page; Playcode AI builds the page and the database behind it, tries a booking itself in a browser, fixes a broken confirmation email and asks before publishing the change to the live site.
A founder turns a web app into an iPhone and Android app from the same project, tests it on a phone through a QR code and keeps the backend, database and email on Playcode Cloud.
A developer signs in the Playcode CLI, runs playcode mcp, and has Claude Code read and change project files, run commands and publish a client's site from the terminal.

In a Cloud app the agent works on its own cloud computer with a terminal, a browser and the app's database, so it writes code, installs packages, runs commands and changes data itself instead of handing back instructions for someone else to follow. It sets up the app's database, file storage, background jobs, email through Playcode Email, AI features through the Playcode AI Gateway and encrypted secrets for keys such as Stripe, and it connects or buys domains. On request it also researches the web and reads competitors' pages, pulls Google search volumes, competitor keywords and backlinks, checks rankings and runs Lighthouse audits, then writes the resulting pages into the site. | Workflow Orchestration | Full |
|
The agent plans the work, splits big jobs among helper agents and carries a task through building, running, checking in a browser and fixing until it works. Once a task has started it keeps going on Playcode's servers after the laptop closes, takes notes sent mid task into the work, and stops to ask when a choice belongs to the owner. The same agent builds a website, turns it into an iPhone and Android app from the same project, and produces decks, images and short videos alongside the product. | Knowledge Grounding & RAG | Partial |
|
The agent grounds its work in the project, the app's database and logs, and the web: asked a market question, it searches, reads the relevant pages and returns a table with links to its sources, and SEO work draws on real Google search volumes, competitor data and Lighthouse results. Briefs and authorized public sources feed website redesigns. There is no knowledge base of the customer's documents for the agent to index and retrieve from beyond what the project and each request contain. Sourceplaycode.io/airead 2026-10-18 |

| Human Oversight & Guardrails | Full |
|
The agent asks before it changes anything in a live app, asks when a decision belongs to the owner rather than making it, and waits for a yes after quoting the new price before resizing an app's machine. The owner can send a note while a task runs and the agent folds it in. A checkpoint is saved before every publish, a failed publish brings the old code back, and returning to a saved point restores code, files and the database together, so a wrong change can be undone in one step. | Security, Identity & Governance | Partial |
|
Access to the API runs on access tokens and browser sign ins limited to the permissions granted, such as project work or domain changes, with sign ins expiring after 30 days unused, and each tool's calls are named in the workspace's activity. Workspaces hold up to 25 members. Behind the service, a single engineer holds production database access, servers sit behind WireGuard with key based SSH, Cloudflare filters public traffic and access events are logged. Playcode is pursuing SOC 2 Type II, with a consultant engaged and policies shared under NDA meanwhile, and there is no single sign on. Sourceplaycode.io/securityread 2026-10-18 |

| Observability & Auditability | Partial |
|
Calls through the API, CLI and MCP server appear in the workspace's activity under the name of the tool that made them, and the agent reads a live app's logs to explain what went wrong when asked. Results come back as working pages, files or fixes, and saved versions show what changed between publishes. A step by step trace of the agent's own commands, browser checks and decisions inside a task, or an export of that history, is not offered. Sourceplaycode.io/docs/developers/apiread 2026-10-18 |
|
| Memory & State Persistence | Partial |
|
The agent keeps a written record of what it built and what the owner decided, so the next conversation starts where the last one stopped, and Cloud apps keep saved points that bring code, files and database back together. Projects, chats and app data persist in the workspace. Ways to view, correct or clear that record, or to carry anything across projects, are not offered, so the memory is a per project log the agent maintains. Sourceplaycode.io/airead 2026-10-18 |
|
| Deployment & Data Residency | Partial |
|
Playcode runs only as a hosted service on dedicated servers in EU data centers, with accounts, projects and databases stored in Germany and Finland, file storage and email in Ireland and Frankfurt, and off site backups in the US. AI requests go to the provider of the chosen model, mostly in the US. Customers cannot pick another region or self host, but every project exports as runnable React, Vue or HTML code with no proprietary runtime, so an app can move to other hosting. | Prebuilt Agents / Templates / Packs | Not documented |
|
Projects start from a plain language description and the agent's clarifying questions, and Playcode offers no gallery of templates, starter apps or packaged agents to copy. Use case pages for builds such as a membership site, a CRM, a client portal or a two sided marketplace explain what a first release needs, and some offer a reference artifact to download. Those pages are guidance a founder reads before prompting, and the agent does not open one as a project and adapt it, so every app begins from a conversation. | Triggers & Channel Coverage | Partial |
|
Work starts when the owner writes to the agent from a laptop or a phone's browser, or when a coding agent such as Claude Code or Cursor drives the workspace through the playcode CLI, its MCP server or the GraphQL API. If a live app misbehaves, the agent reads its logs and reports the cause when asked. Background jobs and schedules run inside the hosted app itself, but nothing schedules or wakes the agent on an event: each piece of agent work begins with a person or a tool they control. | Model Flexibility & Routing | Full |
|
The agent thinks with models from six labs, Anthropic Claude, OpenAI GPT, Google Gemini, xAI Grok, Moonshot Kimi and Z.ai GLM, reached through Playcode's own AI gateway, and models from DeepSeek and Alibaba run when selected. Each chat picks a level, Economy for quick low cost work, Standard for most jobs or Ultra for the hardest problems, with larger models using more credits for the same work. Apps call the same gateway for their own AI features through the SDK, which lists the models an app can use. Sourceplaycode.io/airead 2026-10-18 |

| APIs / SDKs / MCP Extensibility | Full |
|
Everything Playcode does is an operation in one GraphQL API that the app, the agent, the CLI, MCP and the SDK all call, authenticated with scoped access tokens and supporting idempotent writes. The playcode CLI signs in through the browser and acts with the permissions allowed, and playcode mcp lets Claude Code, Cursor or another MCP client list projects, read and change files, run commands, publish and manage domains. The @playcode/sdk package gives an app's backend AI models, agents that use the app's own functions, user chat, email, video rendering and the Playcode API. | Testing, Debugging & Optimization | Full |

In Cloud apps the agent runs commands and tests on its own computer, opens the result in a real browser, tries it and reviews screenshots, and when something is off it fixes it and checks again, for example making a test booking on a page it just built. Mobile builds are tried on a phone through a QR code, and launch guides walk through checking contact paths, SEO and analytics before publishing. A checkpoint before every publish and one step restores make it safe to try a change and roll it back. Sourceplaycode.io/airead 2026-10-18 |

| Browser / Computer-use | Partial |
|
The agent's cloud computer includes a real browser, which it uses to open the app it built, try flows and look at screenshots, and to read web pages while researching competitors or a market. That browser serves checking its own work and reading the web. There is no agent for operating outside services on the owner's behalf, signing in to other portals or controlling a desktop. Pricing
Pro $25 a month; Max from $100 a month
Monthly or annual plan with a monthly credit allowance; credits pay for AI building work, awake server hours, disk, extra bandwidth, email and in app AI
Included quota
Pro: 100 credits a month, 3 Cloud apps, 1 CPU 2 GiB production machine, 100 GB bandwidth. Max: 400 credits a month (packages of 800, 1,600, 4,000 and 10,000), 10 Cloud apps, 2 CPU 4 GiB production machine, 1,000 GB bandwidth. Up to 25 workspace members on every plan.
What is public
Plan prices for Pro and the base Max package, credit allowances, machine sizes and hourly credit rates, bandwidth, top up packages and rollover rules.
Billing mechanics
Self serve subscription with a shared credit balance for building and hosting, top ups and optional auto recharge.
Cost watchouts
Running apps keep consuming credits after building stops; larger model levels use more credits for the same work; domains bill to the card separately.
Variable cost rationale
Credits pay for both building and running: AI work varies with features, models and revisions, and a hosted app keeps spending credits on awake hours, disk, traffic, email and its users' AI requests between building sessions.
Additional watchouts
An always on production machine and AI features in a busy app can cost more than the plan itself.
Overage / add-ons
Usage beyond the monthly credits draws on top up packages ($25, $50, $100 or $200, valid 12 months) or auto recharge; Cloud machines bill 0.05 to 0.6 credits per awake hour by size, disk 0.6 credits per GB a month and traffic beyond the allowance 0.2 credits per GB; credits are 4 to the dollar.
Sales call required
No, self serve available
Free / trial
Free plan without a card: trial AI credits for eligible signups and static publishing on a Playcode address with branding
Lowest paid plan
Pro at $25 a month: 100 credits a month, up to 3 published Cloud apps, custom domains, saved versions and code export
Commercial notes
Code exports as runnable projects with no proprietary runtime; domain purchases go on the saved card.
Key ambiguities
Prices for Max credit packages above 400 credits and any annual discount do not appear in the readable pricing, and a subscription is not a fixed quote to finish a product.
Missing data
Larger Max package prices, annual pricing and Teams or enterprise terms.
