Cohere North

North is the enterprise AI agent platform from Cohere, the Canadian AI company that has raised roughly nine hundred seventy million dollars, reached a five and a half billion dollar valuation, and passed a hundred million dollars in annualized revenue with a business only focus. After months in early access, North became generally available in 2025, and it has been piloted by Royal Bank of Canada, Dell, LG CNS, Ensemble Health Partners, and Palantir. It is aimed squarely at regulated and security conscious organizations that want AI without their data leaving their firewall.

Private deployment is North's headline. Rather than running only on public clouds, Cohere installs North inside a customer's own environment, on premises, in hybrid clouds, in a virtual private cloud, or in fully air gapped networks, so Cohere itself never sees or touches customer data. It was engineered to run on as few as two graphics processors, which Cohere's co founder described as deploying on a machine in a closet. This is one of the most flexible deployment stories in the category, and it directly answers the data sovereignty concerns that stall AI adoption in banking, healthcare, and government.

North goes beyond question answering to do real work. Powered by Cohere's Command family of models, tuned for enterprise reasoning, and its Compass search stack, agents handle repetitive tasks, conduct market research, interpret data, and create assets like tables, documents, and slideshows, a capability strengthened by Cohere's acquisition of Ottogrid. Retrieval is a strength: North leads on accuracy for key enterprise use cases against Microsoft Copilot and Google Vertex, and every output comes with citations and transparent reasoning chains so employees can verify and audit answers. It connects to Gmail, Slack, Salesforce, Outlook, and Linear and integrates with any Model Context Protocol server.

Security and governance are built in. North applies granular access controls, agent autonomy policies, continuous red teaming, and third party audits, and it complies with GDPR, SOC 2, and ISO 27001 under a zero trust model with audit ready monitoring. Because it runs on Cohere's own Command models rather than routing across many providers, model choice is not its focus, and persistent memory, a formal evaluation framework, and computer use are not yet first class. Its center of gravity is secure, private, citation grounded enterprise work, and for regulated buyers that is exactly the point.
