Microsoft Scout
Also known as: Project Lobster, Microsoft Scout Autopilot
Microsoft Scout is a desktop agent for Windows and macOS that takes a request in conversation and carries it out across local files, the shell, a browser it controls and Microsoft 365, from Outlook and Teams to SharePoint and OneDrive. Heartbeat check ins and scheduled or condition triggered automations keep it working in the background, and subagents split research, builds and code review. Microsoft calls it its first Autopilot and builds it on OpenClaw. It is a Frontier preview that needs Microsoft 365 Copilot and GitHub Copilot licenses.
Microsoft sells Microsoft 365 and its Copilot assistant to most large organizations, and Scout is its first Autopilot, the name Microsoft gives to always on agents that work in the background with their own identity. It grew out of Project Lobster, an internal effort to bring the open source OpenClaw agent to Microsoft 365 with enterprise identity, governance and security, and Microsoft unveiled it at Build on June 2, 2026. Scout ships as an experimental release through the Frontier preview program. Copilot Studio, GitHub Copilot and OpenClaw have their own profiles.
A person describes a task in the Scout app, and it picks tools and works through the steps, showing each one as it goes. It reads, writes and searches files in a workspace folder, edits Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents, runs shell commands such as git, gh and PowerShell under a three tier permission system, and drives a browser to navigate, fill forms and read network traffic. In Microsoft 365 it reads and sends Outlook mail, manages the calendar and inbox rules, posts to Teams chats and channels, pulls meeting transcripts, books rooms, updates SharePoint Lists and To Do, shares files with named people and searches work content through WorkIQ.
Subagents for exploring code, running builds and tests, code review and research work in parallel. Heartbeat runs a chosen prompt every 15 minutes to 2 hours within set work hours, and automations fire on a schedule, when a condition becomes true or once. Scout remembers preferences and decisions, records where each memory came from and keeps session history in the user's OneDrive. Models come from the GitHub Copilot catalog, from Microsoft and other makers, and can change per message.
Scout has no separate price during the preview, but each user needs a Microsoft 365 Copilot license, from $18 a user a month for Copilot Business on an annual promotion ($21 standard), and a GitHub Copilot Business seat at $19 a month or Enterprise at $39, whose pooled AI credits pay for model usage.
An admin opens Frontier access, deploys an Intune policy and signs an attestation, because prompts and content travel through GitHub Copilot to Microsoft and outside model providers, where Microsoft 365 residency, retention, label enforcement and eDiscovery do not apply. Group Policy or Intune can block tool servers, models and providers, force approval on every action beyond a read, switch off background modes and confine Scout to its workspace. Scout does not train on customer data and is unavailable in GCC, GCC High, DoD and sovereign clouds.
Scout fits knowledge workers and developers in Microsoft 365 organizations who want an agent on their own machine to triage mail, prepare for meetings, keep documents current and run builds and scripts while they are away, and IT teams that want that agent under Intune policy from the first install. It runs only as a desktop app, with no mobile client and no API for other software to call. Organizations that need Microsoft 365 residency commitments to cover AI processing, and agencies on government clouds, sit outside what the preview allows, and its features may change before general availability.

Integrations
Outlook mail, calendar and inbox rules, Teams chats, channels, meeting transcripts and rooms, Microsoft To Do, SharePoint Lists, and files in OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams, with WorkIQ search across Microsoft 365 content and the directory. On the machine it uses the file system, a shell with git, gh, curl and PowerShell, and a browser it controls, and the desktop app connects to MCP servers. Models come through GitHub Copilot, and automations can be imported from GitHub repositories.
In practice
A program manager sets a Heartbeat to run every 30 minutes from 9 AM to 6 PM on weekdays, checking for calendar conflicts and urgent mail. Scout flags clashes and urgent threads in the conversation, and because background runs skip anything that needs approval, replies wait for the manager.
Before a quarterly review, a finance lead asks Scout to pull the last three meeting transcripts, the related email threads and the budget workbook, build a PowerPoint summary in the workspace and share it with two named colleagues for editing once the lead approves.
A developer asks Scout to fix a failing test suite. A Task subagent runs the build and tests, a Code review subagent checks the change for bugs, and Scout shows the exact git push command and waits for approval before running it.

Scout reads, sends, replies to and organizes Outlook mail, manages calendar events and inbox rules, reads and posts to Teams chats and channels, retrieves meeting transcripts, books rooms, and works with To Do, SharePoint Lists and files in OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams, including sharing with named people. WorkIQ searches across Microsoft 365 content and the directory, and on the machine Scout runs git, gh, curl and PowerShell. The desktop app also reaches MCP servers, which admins can block as a permission kind or a tool server. Sourcelearn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-scout/work-with-microsoft-365read 2026-10-24 |

Scout picks tools and works through a task step by step, showing progress as it goes, and queues follow up messages in order while it works. It launches background subagents of five kinds, Explore for codebase research, Task for builds, tests, lints and installs, Code review, Research with citations and a general agent with the full toolset, and each reports back when it finishes. Research agents take broad questions across several sources in parallel, and an automation can carry its own multistep workflow. WorkIQ, switched on by default, lets Scout search across the Microsoft 365 content and people a user's account can reach, inside the tenant's existing permissions. Within the workspace, search covers file names and contents without a network call, and web research comes back with citations, with research agents gathering several sources at once for broad questions. Microsoft warns that answers can be wrong when source data is incomplete or outdated, and Scout treats email and web content as untrusted data. Every action starts out needing confirmation, and shell commands fall into tiers that auto approve reads such as ls and git log, prompt for installs, pushes and network requests, and block dangerous commands outright. Before Scout sends mail, posts in Teams or runs a prompted command it shows the exact content or command, with Approve, Always allow and Deny. Users can mark sensitive paths that always ask, admins can force approval for every action beyond a read, background modes skip anything that would prompt, and work can be paused, redirected or canceled at any time. Users sign in with a Microsoft 365 work or school account and a GitHub Copilot Business or Enterprise seat, and access opens only after an admin grants Frontier, deploys an Intune policy and signs an attestation. Device policies block tool servers, permission kinds, models, providers or browser destinations and confine file and shell access to the workspace. Scout tracks sensitivity labels, never writes labeled content to an unprotected destination and does not train on customer data. Model processing runs through GitHub Copilot under GitHub's agreements, where Microsoft 365 residency, retention, label enforcement and eDiscovery do not apply. Each action Scout takes appears in the conversation, with a preview of the content or exact command before approval, and the Heartbeat panel logs every check in while each automation keeps a run history. Session history sits in the user's OneDrive, where past conversations can be searched and restored, and credentials are redacted from logs and diagnostics. These views belong to each user, and the Scout admin controls set policy for what the agent may do without offering a review of what it did. Scout saves memories of preferences, decisions and context on its own, records whether each came from the session, an import or outside content, and lists them under Settings, View memories. Memory and session data live in the user's OneDrive inside the tenant, covered by the Microsoft DPA and the organization's Purview configuration, while automation instructions and tool output stay on the device. Memory is layered, so information in regular use persists and unused information fades, and past sessions can be searched and restored. | Deployment & Data Residency | Partial |
|
Scout installs on the user's own Windows 11 or macOS 12 machine, keeps the files it creates in a local workspace and stores automation instructions and tool output on the device under the organization's endpoint controls, while memory and sessions sit in OneDrive inside the tenant. Prompts and content go through GitHub Copilot to Microsoft and outside model providers, so Microsoft 365 data residency commitments do not cover that processing. It is unavailable in GCC, GCC High, DoD and sovereign or national clouds, and availability otherwise follows Frontier enrollment. Pricing
No separate charge during the Frontier preview. Requires Microsoft 365 Copilot, from $18 a user a month, and GitHub Copilot Business at $19 a seat or Enterprise at $39, with model usage billed in GitHub AI credits.
Per user seats for Microsoft 365 Copilot and GitHub Copilot, with model usage metered in tokens and converted to pooled GitHub AI credits.
Included quota
GitHub Copilot Business includes 1,900 AI credits a seat a month and Enterprise 3,900, pooled across the billing entity and reset on the first of each month without rollover. One AI credit is $0.01.
What is public
The license prerequisites, GitHub Copilot Business and Enterprise seat prices, the AI credits each seat includes and the per credit rate, and Microsoft 365 Copilot Business prices.
Billing mechanics
An organization licenses users for Microsoft 365 Copilot and GitHub Copilot, enrolls in Frontier and completes the Intune policy and attestation. Scout's model usage bills through the user's GitHub account against the organization's pooled AI credits.
Cost watchouts
A Heartbeat every 15 minutes through the working day and automations on Max context can spend through a seat's pooled credits, with overage billed to the organization unless an admin caps it.
Variable cost rationale
Seats are flat, but every Scout prompt, Heartbeat check in and automation consumes model tokens billed as GitHub AI credits, and paid usage beyond the pooled allowance is on by default. Larger context windows, higher reasoning effort and frequent background runs raise the draw.
Additional watchouts
Paid AI credit usage is on by default, so budgets need setting before background modes are switched on.
Overage / add-ons
Additional usage is on by default and bills at published per credit rates to the organization. If an admin turns paid usage off, usage stops until the next cycle, and user, cost center and enterprise budgets can halt a user sooner.
Sales call required
Mixed (some tiers require a call)
Free / trial
Free Frontier preview on top of the required licenses
Lowest paid plan
No separate charge in preview; Microsoft 365 Copilot Business from $18 a user a month plus GitHub Copilot Business at $19
Commercial notes
Scout is an experimental Frontier release that may change or never reach general availability, and it is not offered in US government or sovereign clouds.
Key ambiguities
Scout's own price after the preview is not public, the Microsoft 365 Copilot Enterprise price is not on the pricing page, and Microsoft's setup pages differ on whether a Microsoft 365 Copilot license is required in addition to GitHub Copilot.
Missing data
Scout pricing at general availability and the Microsoft 365 Copilot Enterprise seat price.
