Hex is an agentic analytics platform built around a multiplayer notebook where SQL, Python, R, and no-code coexist, extended with a family of agents that do real analytical work. The Notebook Agent, launched August 2025 and substantially expanded since, acts as a pair programmer that writes and edits code, understands upstream and downstream dependencies in a flow, debugs its own work, performs agentic search to discover the right data sources, executes analysis by writing and running code to transform, visualize, and model data, and summarizes results in plain language. Hex's stated differentiator is that data work needs more than code generation: it needs analytics-specific tooling grounded in governed context, so the agent draws on Context Studio and semantic models plus live warehouse schemas rather than guessing. Threads provides conversational self-serve for non-technical stakeholders, and the two halves compound: every Thread becomes a Hex project the data team can open as a notebook for inspection or deeper analysis with full transparency into the agent's reasoning, while published work becomes context that Threads references in future answers. Hex Magic supplies inline AI autocomplete with error explanation and join suggestions, Generative Apps builds dashboards and data apps from a prompt, and a Modeling Agent assists semantic model creation. The company frames data teams as the governors of AI answer quality, much as they curate trusted dashboards today. Privacy is handled with zero data retention agreements with model providers by default, metadata held in a secure database inside Hex's architecture, and no provider training on customer data.
