Agent Zero
Also known as: A0, Agent Zero AI, agent0ai
Open-source multi-agent framework with its own Linux-VM agent, subordinate agents, and dynamic tool creation.
Agent Zero is an open-source agentic framework that gives an AI agent a full Linux system inside a single Docker container, rather than a fixed set of pre-built tools. The agent uses that environment as its workbench: writing and running code, driving a real XFCE desktop and a built-in browser, editing documents and spreadsheets alongside the user, and creating its own tools on the fly. Almost nothing is hard-coded; prompts, tools, and behavior all live in editable files, and any agent can spawn subordinate agents to break a task into focused sub-tasks. It is model-agnostic (OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google models, plus local models via Ollama), extensible through MCP, A2A, and a 100+ community plugin hub, and runs self-hosted so teams keep full control over data and credentials. First released in 2024 by Jan Tomasek and now past 18,000 GitHub stars, it targets developers, researchers, and technical teams who want a transparent, fully customizable alternative to closed agent products.

Integrations
Model-agnostic: works with OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google models, local models via Ollama, and account-backed plans through OpenAI Codex OAuth. Extends through MCP servers, A2A connectors, and a Plugin Hub of 100+ community plugins, plus a built-in browser and SearXNG private search.
In practice
You hit a task no pre-built tool covers. Agent Zero writes and runs the code it needs inside its own Linux container, building the tool on the fly instead of waiting for a vendor to add a feature.
A job is too big for one agent to hold in its head. Agent Zero spawns subordinate agents, each taking a focused sub-task, and coordinates them back into one result.
You can't send company data to someone else's servers. Agent Zero runs self-hosted in a Docker container you control, so prompts, tools, and credentials stay on your own infrastructure.

| Integrations & Tool CallingUses the operating system as its tool, writes and runs code, creates new tools on the fly, connects to external tools through the Model Context Protocol, and installs from a hub of more than one hundred community plugins, broad and dynamic tool calling. | Full |
|---|---|
| Workflow OrchestrationRuns a hierarchical multi agent architecture where a primary agent spawns subordinate agents, each in its own isolated Docker sandbox, and delegates subtasks to them, genuine autonomous multi agent orchestration. | Full |
| Knowledge Grounding & RAGShips a self hosted search engine and a knowledge store with recall so agents can research and reference material, real retrieval, though grounded citation of every claim is not the headline of the product. | Partial |
| Human Oversight & GuardrailsIsolates every agent in a Docker sandbox, manages secrets, scans plugins before install, and offers Time Travel snapshots to inspect diffs and revert workspace state, real containment and recovery, though without a formal approval or step limit enforcement engine. | Partial |
| Security, Identity & GovernanceRuns fully self hosted in Docker with local models and a private self hosted search so data does not leave the machine, and includes secrets management, real data residency, though without published certifications, single sign on, or role based access controls. | Partial |
| Observability & AuditabilityExposes the agent reasoning and acting trajectory transparently, keeps browser screenshots of important steps, and provides a memory dashboard and Time Travel diff inspection, real process visibility, though not a full tracing and metrics platform. | Partial |
| Memory & State PersistenceProvides persistent memory that maintains state across sessions with automatic consolidation, filtered recall, and a memory dashboard, so agents track completed work and learn from past successes and failures, a first class memory system. | Full |
| Deployment & Data ResidencyIs open source under a permissive license and runs entirely self hosted in a Docker container, on a desktop launcher, or as a remote instance, and works with local models through Ollama for private offline operation, real self hosting and data residency. | Full |
| Prebuilt Agents, Templates & PacksShips a browsable Plugin Hub of community plugins and a Skills system for wrapping custom tools and extensions, real reusable packs and scaffolding, though these are capability plugins rather than a marketplace of ready made agents. | Partial |
| Triggers & Channel CoverageCan be driven through a web interface, a desktop application, a command line, an application programming interface, and a Model Context Protocol server, multiple user invoked channels, though without documented scheduled or external event triggers. | Partial |
| Model Flexibility & RoutingIs provider agnostic across OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI Grok, Google, OpenRouter, GitHub Copilot, and local models through Ollama, and lets you assign different models to different agent roles, genuine multi provider and role based model selection. | Full |
| APIs, SDKs & MCP ExtensibilityIs open source and built for extension through a prompt driven design, a plugin and Skills system, a command line, and a streamable Model Context Protocol server that exposes its capabilities to other tools, a comprehensive extensibility surface. | Full |
| Testing, Debugging & OptimizationExecutes, tests, and iterates on its own code and adapts and retries autonomously when errors occur, a real self correcting loop, though it does not ship a dedicated testing or evaluation engine for agents. | Partial |
| Browser & Computer UseGives every agent a full Linux system with shell, code execution, and a Playwright driven browser that can open pages, click, type, upload files, and take screenshots, positioned as an open alternative to computer use agents, genuine browser and computer control as a core capability. | Full |
