Agentic Index

Airtable vs Retool (2026)

Airtable fits when the work is enriching records in a shared database at scale, and Retool fits when agents need to act across internal systems under engineering control. That verdict is the Agentic Index coverage score, graded from each vendor's own published materials.

Airtable is a relational database and app platform whose Field Agents sit inside fields and work on every record. They analyze documents, search the web, translate text or generate images, and they can run on their own whenever data is added or changed. Omni, its conversational builder, sets up tables, interfaces, agents and automations from a plain language request. Retool is an internal tools platform whose agents take instructions and tools, then decide which tools to call and in what order, delegating to other agents or reaching outside agents over A2A. Their reach runs in opposite directions. Airtable's own MCP server opens its bases to outside agents such as Claude, while Retool agents reach out through more than 100 connectors, from Postgres and Snowflake to Salesforce and Stripe, and up to 20 remote MCP servers each. Oversight is where the two split hardest. Retool can require a person to approve a tool call before it runs, ships evals that score tool choice and answers against test cases, and replays every run with its cost and tool calls. Airtable has no approval step before an individual agent action and no evaluation harness. Retool also runs self hosted in a customer's own VPC, where Airtable is cloud only with an EU residency option. The bills grow differently as well. Airtable charges agent work in AI credits that scale with record volume, and a Field Agent run has no fixed credit price, so that half of the bill is hard to model in advance. Retool bills agents by the hour of runtime, priced by model, after 20 included hours a month on every plan below Enterprise.

This comparison is published by Agentic Index, an independent agentic AI vendor research platform. Airtable and Retool are each graded against the same 14 capability Agentic Index taxonomy, from the vendor's own public materials under the Agentic Index verification standard, alongside 1,061 researched vendors. No vendor pays for placement and no vendor has reviewed this page. How this evidence is graded

Choose Airtable if

  • The agent's job is to fill and update fields across thousands of records in a shared base.
  • Agents should run on their own every time a record is added or changed.
  • Business teams should describe an app in plain words and have tables, interfaces and agents built for them.
  • Contracts, invoices and transcripts should become structured fields without a developer.
  • Data must sit in the EU under encryption keys your company holds.

Choose Retool if

  • Agents should call internal APIs, saved queries and workflows under your existing permissions.
  • A person should approve chosen tool calls before they run.
  • Engineers want evals that test tool choice and answers before each release.
  • Everything must run self hosted inside your own VPC.
  • Each run should be replayable with its token cost, runtime and every tool call.

Action & orchestration

Integrations & Tool Calling

Ability to connect agents to real systems through native integrations, OAuth-authenticated actions, custom tools, APIs, webhooks, or MCP-compatible tools.

Workflow Orchestration

Ability to sequence, branch, retry, route, and combine deterministic workflow nodes with autonomous agent steps.

Triggers & Channel Coverage

How agents wake up and where they work: schedules, webhooks, message events, CRM events, inbox events, chat, email, voice, and collaboration tools.

Knowledge & context

Knowledge Grounding & RAG

Ability to ground agent behavior in company data through document ingestion, retrieval, external knowledge APIs, semantic search, or RAG layers.

Memory & State Persistence

Ability to persist context across a run, conversation, workflow, user, team, or longer-term memory layer.

Control & trust

Human Oversight & Guardrails

Approval steps, consent checkpoints, escalation rules, structured guardrails, policy constraints, and pause/resume controls.

Security, Identity & Governance

RBAC, SSO, auditability, encryption, least-privilege tool access, compliance posture, and data handling policy.

Observability & Auditability

Traces, logs, execution histories, metrics, audit events, and debugging detail for production agent behavior.

Deployment & Data Residency

Deployment modes and options, including SaaS, dedicated cloud, VPC, on-prem, hybrid, local runtime, and self-hosting.

Solution readiness

Prebuilt Agents, Templates & Packs

Ready-made workflows, packaged employees, templates, blueprints, industry solutions, and role-specific agents that reduce time-to-value.

Platform extensibility

Model Flexibility & Routing

Ability to work across multiple foundation models, route tasks to different models, or let buyers bring their own providers and keys.

APIs, SDKs & MCP Extensibility

Composability layer: stable APIs, SDKs, MCP tool consumption/serving, custom tools, and integration into internal systems.

Testing, Debugging & Optimization

Testing, debugging, scoring, retries, fallbacks, quality gates, and optimization loops for improving agent workflows before and after deployment.

Specialist automation

Browser & Computer Use

Browser, desktop, or remote/local computer control for workflows that cannot be handled through stable APIs alone.
